Cheese and Crackers –

A Lesson in Appreciation and Fulfillment

I used to work with a guy at a radio/television station in the city. We’d hang out and go for coffee in the late afternoon, you know the time you get a little sleepy after lunch. I’d get my iced latte, and scone, he’d get a hot coffee and scone. As we’d walk back from the shop to work, I would munch and sip down my latte, so anxious to get over the afternoon doldrums. My co-worker however wouldn’t so much as nibble on his afternoon treat. After a few times making the walk back to work, I had to ask him why he didn’t so much as take a little bite of his afternoon treats as we were on our way back to the office.

Take your time and Enjoy your fuel!
On our way back to the office, I finally asked him – “so why don’t you delve in to your coffee and scone on our way back to work.  My (thin) co-workers response amazed me at the time, but makes such great sense.  He said he liked to take his time and enjoy the food and beverage at his desk, while on break – later in his work day.   While walking back from the shop, his breathing is elevated and he wouldn’t be able to really enjoy the snack.  He enjoyed eating at a time when he wouldn’t be pulled away, when he could focus on the food, sustenance and enjoyment.  It makes SO much sense.  Especially at a time when so many people are hurrying around, eating on the cheap & quick!   These are a big reason our society is growing bigger, and diabetes is on the rise.  The point is, to really enjoy our food: eat it slowly with appreciation.  It can make a big difference in our relationship (with food). Which got me to thinking, does appreciating food change our relationship with it?

cheese and crackers -
As I sat down with a plate of wonderful cheese and crackers – I dug right in – what an awesome afternoon snack! The plate probably had 10 or 11 crackers stacked with my favorite cheese (a smoked cheddar). It wasn’t until there were three crackers left that I began to change my mind from ‘dig in’ to ‘better appreciate them before they’re gone’. Reminded me of that old country song – live like you were dying. It wasn’t until they (crackers) were almost gone that I had the notion to appreciate them. I am so lucky to be able to be present and cognizant of my ideas and emotions, to be present and connected so that I can monitor and change my mind and my reality as a result. It all starts with being appreciative/grateful for the incredible gifts already present in your life. From cheese and crackers to that nourishing meal you’ll enjoy tonight, to the incredible choices available to you at the grocery store, to the ability to enjoy all the fruits of a blessed life.

Want to experience more in your life? Start with Appreciation (for what you have)!

Appreciation & fulfillment- It’s awesome to be able to learn big life lessons, even through just sitting down for an afternoon snack.  Maybe that’s the power of maturing, or being clear minded.  The wonderful thing about the law of attraction is realizing the truth in everyday living and how it parlays into other areas of our lives.  The foundation of moving forward from where you are is being okay with the past, appreciating all the wonderful things already in your life and enjoying the journey.  Slowly move forward while enjoying cheese and crackers.    Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

“Don’t let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.” -- Earl Nightingale, speaker, author
