The Best Muscle Cars to Invest In

Muscle cars are different to describe in terms of current value, mostly because they are rare today only because no one wanted them when they were new. Here at GoOnTheRoad.com, we’ll look at the top 10 muscle cars you want to invest in.

The top 10 list:

1. 1971 Plymouth “Hemi” ‘Cuda convertible.
2. 1969 Dodge Charger R/T-440 hardtop.
3. 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28/SS coupe.
4. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS-454/LS-6 convertible
5. 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 roadster
6. 1968 Shelby GT-500-KR convertible.
7. 1970 Plymouth Superbird-440 hardtop
8. 1969 Ford Torino-Talladega hardtop
9. 1969 Pontiac GTO “Judge” convertible
10. 1970 Oldsmobile 442/W-30 hardtop

Of these 10 vehicles, four of them are convertibles with race tuned engines. At the time that these muscle cars were released for sale new, this combination was not very popular with vehicle buyers for a few reasons – they were terribly expensive and they didn’t make sense (why would you purchase a high-output engine only to add on weight with a convertible top).

However investors today are interested in racing these muscle cars – they are purchased to be seen and heard in. The bigger engines are far more desirable than smaller engines and convertibles are a much hotter commodity than hard tops. This combination of ‘wants’ in a muscle car raise the value and price of these hot muscle cars that investors are looking at today.

Two of the cars on this list are ‘homologation specials’ which were created to qualify as a model in the stock car racing world. NASCAR rules at the time these cars were built stated that manufactures had to have a number of cars available for public purchase. However, the rules didn’t say that anyone actually had to purchase them.

The Plymouth Superbird has a tacked on point nose and a rear wing that evokes some laughter, even among muscle car investors. However, at the time these cars were new, the dealers allowed them into their show rooms not out of choice, but because they had to. Today though, this bird-ish car is one of the loved muscle cars of collectors.

The list of the top 10 muscle cars to invest in is just the tip of the iceberg. However, it’s important to realize that not all muscle cars will evoke the six and seven figures that this list of the top 10 muscle cars does. If you’re looking to invest in a less expensive muscle car that will someday explode into the six-and-seven figure range, experts recommend that you are quite careful with your choices. Be sure that you buy the guide books for a specific vehicle you are considering and join an owners club to learn more about the car from current owners.

It’s also a good idea to look at the brands of vehicles that are more often overlooked, such as General Motors, Buick’s and Oldsmobile’s, instead of the commanding prices that Pontiac’s and Chevrolet’s demand.

Always be aware of fake vehicle, even with the less expensive ones. It’s always prudent to research before buying, regardless of the price tag on the muscle car, to be sure that it is not a fake.
